The Three Goods: How I Keep my Skin Clear
As many of you may or may not know, I have been a long time acne sufferer. I spent several years coming down on myself and feeling like I wasn't enough. Living with such a small amount of self-love pushed me to realize: maybe self-love is the answer to overcome this skin ailment.
It took a time of adversity to look deep inside of myself and find the true definition of what it means to love myself. I began three practices that have changed my life and my skin for the better. I have labeled these practices "The Three Goods." I will jump right in...
( Please note: I am not a licensed medical professional. The information following is based on the trial and error of my own experience. I leave my suggestions with hopes of healing others, but I cannot guarantee that what works for me will also work for you.)
1. EAT GOOD
I am not going to give you a huge spiel on how I only eat greens and I don't indulge in deliciousness. Let's not get it twisted; I still treat myself! But I do eat for my Dosha. A Dosha is the Ayurvedic body type you were born with that pretty much determines how your skin reacts to certain food. I am a Pitta Dosha, which means I have to be careful not to over indulge in spicy foods, sour/unripe foods, fermented foods and alcohol. My skin is triggered right away and reacts angrily to these indulgences. My daily vegetable and fruit intake is high. I also incorporate healthy grains and various meats when I crave it. So overall, I feed myself the nutrients I need and I keep processed food to a bare minimum. This lifestyle of eating has helped me very much in pacifying my acne erruptions. 2. FEEL GOOD
This "Good" took me a long time to master without using the convenience of numbing. For years I masked my pain and issues with alcohol, shopping, binge eating and giving my body to men who didn't deserve it. These were all the masks I used as a means of control, but in reality I was damn near out of control. Now that I have learned to feel good by doing things I enjoy and to handle my stress in healthy ways, there is no turning back.
Meditation is a practice that has helped immensely. I used to roll my eyes when I would hear people say they meditated. I felt like it was just a way for people to brag about how zen they were. I've come to learn that the peace is real deal. If your heart is ready for that peace; your mind will follow suit. You can find a plethora of "Guided Meditations" on YouTube.com.
Working Out is a part of my daily routine right after meditating. I love waking up and running, walking my dog around the neighborhood or having an at-home yoga session. It really puts me in a great mindset and sets me up for my day. And knowing that I am honoring my body by keeping it healthy makes me look and feel great! You can find my favorite Youtube yoga instructor here. She's a bit quirky but I have a huge appreciation for those that are their authentic selves. It's beautiful to witness.
Reading and Writing are two practices that have changed my perspective on life for the better. I LOVE reading self help books. I try to get my hands on as many as possible. Because I read so much, recommendations may have to wait for another post. I will say, my number one tip is finding used books on Amazon. There have been times where I've paid just the shipping cost on books that have changed my life. Another game changer for me is my daily journal writing. Growing up, I wasn't really raised to express or understand my emotions in a productive way. Writing those feelings out has really helped me understand them and in turn, become more mindful. Taking five to ten minutes out of my day to write a gratitude list has helped me to become a happier person as well. I stay prepared by keeping my journal and an awesome book on me at all times.
3. CLEAN GOOD
NON TOXIC, NON TOXIC, NON TOXIC! Once I switched over to natural skin care products, I noticed such a tremendous difference in my skin. I have a theory that fillers, preservatives and sulfates just cause complications. I created PurpL Goat because nothing was working for me. I just felt my skin becoming angrier and more irritated. All of the items in my line contain nourishing, gentle ingredients from the earth. And it pleasures me to know that every product carries minimal constituents so you are only applying active, effective ingredients onto the skin. Also, NO PICKING ladies and gents. I learned the hard way that your skin will never heal if try to perform your own extractions.
There was a time I tried ANYTHING to clear my skin quickly. I always wanted instant gratification and lacked patience. I read somewhere a few years back that urine can be good for your skin so applied a thin layer to my face (of my own, not that it makes it any better) with a cotton ball. That's how psychologically f***ed I was (lol). Now I am more aware that my mind and body must be in sync for my skin to stay consistently healthy. I know when I break out I am slacking on one of these three goods. Like I said, it took me awhile to get here and adversity was the cause; but I'm here and glowing!
